Oscar Pistorius was born on November 22, 1986 in Sandton, South Africa. He is a well-known track and field competitor. Known as the Blade Runner, this South African sprint runner and double amputee participated in the Olympics.

At the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships, Pistorius won gold in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter events, breaking the world record over 200 meters. Pistorius comes from an African family with partial Italian ancestry from his maternal grandfather, who was an Italian immigrant to Kenya. His mother tongue is Afrikaans, and he speaks English well.

Both his legs were amputated at 11 months of age due to a birth defect he was born missing both legs and the outer part of both fibulae. Pistorius ran in non-disabled sprint events and sprint events for below-knee conditions. He was the 10th athlete to compete in both the Paralympic Games and the Olympic Games.

Career

After becoming the Paralympic champion, Pistorius tried to enter international competition with a disability due to arguments by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and his artificial limbs gave him an unfair advantage. Pistorius prevailed in this legal dispute. At the 2011 World Championships in Athletics, Pistorius became the first amputee to win a disabled world track medal. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Pistorius was the first double-leg amputee to participate.

Despite falling in the preliminary round for the 200m, she qualified for the final. He won the final in a world record time of 21.97 seconds, beating American runners, Marlon Shirley and Brian Fraser, both with single amputations. In 2005, Pistorius finished sixth at the South African Championships for the Disabled over 400 meters with a world-record time of 47.34 seconds, And in the same year at the Paralympic World Cup he won gold in the 100m and 200m, beating his previous 200m world record.

In the early hours of Thursday, 14 February 2013, Steenkamp was shot dead by Pistorius at his Pretoria home. Pistorius admitted that he shot Steenkamp, but said he mistook him for an intruder. Pistorius was taken into police custody and formally charged with murder in a Pretoria court on 15 February 2013. 

The entire trial was broadcast live via audio and some portions of the trial were also televised live. Judge Thokozile Masipa extended Pistorius’ sentence by six years. On the state’s appeal for a longer sentence, the Supreme Court of Appeal increased the sentence to a total of 15 years.On January 5, 2024, Pistorius was granted a parole extension.
